Wesley Silcox, Betting on Lucky 7

Joining Cody Teel and Sage Kimzey as former PRCA World Champions returning to the Thomas and Mack Arena, the dean of the bull riders, thirty-year-old Wesley Silcox. This will be the seventh time the million dollar plus earnings cowboy will compete for the PRCA’s championship title.

“I gave it all I had this year, and I’m happy to complete some goals,” said Silcox, 30, of Santaquin, who earned $105,778 through the rigors of rodeo’s regular season. “I didn’t win any money in the Xtreme Bulls this year, so that was all off rodeo. It feels pretty good,” he told Ted Harbin of Twisted Rodeo in an interview earlier this month.

In 2007 Silcox sailed thru Vegas winning the average and the year-end title of the PRCA, but it has been three years since he saw the bright lights of Las Vegas in December and the three guys ahead of him on the PRCA’s World Standings rankings are not likely to go down without a fight. Silcox will have to ride well to stop Kimzey, Breding, and Eldred to reach his goal of a second PRCA World Championship.

Silcox has ridden in as many CBR Finals as PRCA, maybe more, with his best finish being in 2013 when he won the average at the CBR World Finals at Cheyenne Frontier Days.

The former Utah State High School Bull Riding Champion of 2002, begins his NFR journey in fourth place with $105, 778 in PRCA earnings and with this year’s nightly purse he is in position for a good finish, with a stellar performance in Vegas. The largest purse in the sport, a record $8.8 million has no doubt played a part in Silcox’s efforts this year to qualify. Go-round winners will collect more than $26,000 each of the 10 rounds and the average winner will pocket an additional $67,000 for winning the NFR average.

Wilcox’s family, which has expanded since his last appearance, his wife Jerika and two children will be in Vegas to cheer him on for the first time in their young lives and that will no doubt be a great source of inspiration for the cowboy who relies on bull riding to make a living.

With 1,276 recorded professional outs, Silcox will no doubt be the “go to” bull rider for NFR rookies in the locker room. The right handed Silcox has over 50 career 90 point plus rides with several of those coming from NFR competition.

IN HIS OWN WORDS

“My dad pretty much taught my brother everything he knew about riding bulls, and then my dad and my brother taught me everything I needed to know. And I'm still learnin' stuff from my dad. I think everybody can learn something new,” said Silcox in a May 20 telephone interview from his home in Utah County.
