Clayton's Bio:

At 20 years old not many people have accomplished much. In fact, most young adults are still trying to figure out what it is they want to do for the rest of their lives. Not Clayton Baethge. Clayton, who will turn 20 on April 27th, says all he has ever wanted to do is ride bulls. That he does, and quite well. So well he went from thirteenth in the CBR Crown Royal World Standings to the top to win the World Championship title.

Clayton has proven he is deserving of the title at each CBR event and it came down to January 23rd and 24th in Las Vegas at the South Point Equestrian Center and the Waggin’ Train World Championship to claim the ultimate victory. On the first night he climbed aboard Skat Jacket to score a 90.5 and then continued to crank it on a ride on Apollo – landing him a 91 on the final night to clinch the title, the check, and a new Dodge truck.

This young man does not fit your typical image of a “cowboy” though. On the final night of the competition he sported a bright blue felt hat made by American Hat Company. His typical attire is usually extreme clothing and “skater” style caps. He likes listening to classics and one of his favorites is Bob Seger. He is not afraid to be a stand out.
“My style does get a lot of attention, but I hope it brings people to pay more attention to my riding. That is where I really make an impression,” says Clayton.

Clayton and a group of 6 riders have dubbed themselves STYG, South Texas Young Guns, a group of young cowboys from the same area Clayton was born and raised – Johnson City, Texas. Three of these riders, including Clayton’s brother Cody, earned the title “Johnson City Mafia” by Don Gay as they all drew attention during the Championship competition by their outstanding ability and riding demonstrated during the two day event.

Although Clayton isn’t your typical looking cowboy his roots are deep in rodeo.  “My grandfather rode… many of my family members rode including my brother. I was always around it. It is all I have ever wanted to do,” says Clayton and adds, “All I have ever wanted to do is provide and support my family. I know bull riding won’t last forever, so I have to think about my future.” He plans to invest in the future and buy livestock with the money he won recently.

His future involves some big changes as well, including marriage to his girlfriend Ashley and a new baby, a girl due in June. Becoming a full time family man and with his future as a bull rider so bright he may not have time to enjoy his favorite hobby – hunting. But he says, “That’s ok. I love what I do… being on the road with my buddies. I look forward to wining more titles and being a good spokesperson for the CBR as their 2008 Champion.”
