Corey Maier Wins Don Johnson Ram CBR Bulls on the Border Bull Bash

LOS FRESNOS, Texas (Sept. 14, 2013) --- It was a 32-hour drive for Corey Maier to get to Los Fresnos to compete at the Don Johnson Ram CBR Bulls on the Border Bull Bash. Winning the championship on Saturday night made it well worth it.

The Timber Lake, S.D., resident had been competing at the Pendleton (Ore.) Round Up Rodeo prior to coming here, over 2,200 miles away.  He and his older brother Ardie made the drive together. Corey earned a $15,000 check for the championship, equalling over $400 an hour or nearly $7 per mile.

Maier, 28, says the biggest influence on his rodeo career came from his grandfather Bud Day of Faith, S.D., a member of the South Dakota Rodeo Hall of Fame. The 5'11" bull rider, who placed second in the opening round at the Red Wilk Construction CBR Bull Bash in Huron, S.D., on Aug. 29, says the best thing about the Road to Cheyenne Tour is the quality of the bulls. "I like it because it's really a riding contest, not a drawing contest," he said. "You have a chance to win something on any bull you get on."

Due to his success at these two events, Maier has taken command of the world standings with 266.5 points. Aaron Pass who won in Huron is second with 166.

Corey Bailey won the opening round with an 89.5 score on Ragin JT, owned by Exclusive Genetics and Team Whisnant. Maier marked 88 points on Speck, owned by Loe/Circle T/Melton. Tate Harris of Palestine, Texas, was third, and fourth place was divided four ways, between Texans Colby Jones of Dayton, Michael Earl of Pflugerville, Jared Long of Ramona, Okla. and Jeremy Hanson of Towner, Colo.

Ten cowboys in the field of 24 made full eight-second, qualified rides in the opening round. To complete the 12 spots in the semi-finals, two contestants who had stayed on the longest without making the whistle also advanced. One of them, Tate Smith of Litchville, North Dakota, made the only qualified ride, earning 83 points on Barbwire, owned by J.C. Knapp.

In the Shoot-Out finale, Corey Maier marked 90 points on Dougie, owned by Brad Vogele. Corey Bailey challenged with an 88 score on Scene of the Party, owned by Mike Rawson. Maier won the aggregate by one-half point over Bailey.

Thanks to a break in the extended drought in the Rio Grande Valley, the outdoor arena was a bit like nearby beaches -- a lot of sand covered by a lot of water. It made for surprisingly good footing for the bulls. Twelve different bull "franchise" owners provided three bulls each to comprise the 36 bulls needed for the opening round and semi-finals. A special award, worth $25,000, went to the franchise with the best combined score. The bulls -- Hoky Poky, Speck and Rainbow -- were owned by the trio of Winston Loe of Minden, La., Circle T Ranch of Keatchie, La., and Cory Melton of Tolar, Texas.

Don Johnson Ram of Brownsville was the title sponsor, one of many in the community who welcomed the CBR for their first event at the southern-most tip of Texas. Fifty-eight youth representing the the Los Fresnos Falcons National Junior R.O.T.C. were part of the volunteer staff, as well as members of the Los Fresnos PRCA Rodeo Committee and local Fire Department and EMTs.

The next stop on the CBR tour is the Scottsdale Showdown Chevy Silverado Chute Out in Scottsdale, Ariz. on October 19. The tour culminates at the Cheyenne Frontier Days in July 2014, with a World Finals and $100,000 bonus to the tour champion.

The following are results from the Don Johnson Ram CBR Bulls on the Border Bull Bash, Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013---
