After this weekend, there may soon be some new rednecks in the state of Washington. Zack Oakes of Tonaskat, WA, won Championship Bull Riding's Texas Redneck Bull Bash presented by Cavender's Boot City, Loving Lincoln Mercury Toyota Scion and KICKS 105 on Saturday night in Lufkin, TX, and pocketed a $10,000 paycheck.

Another Washington state cowboy kicked off the evening with a win as J.C. Bean of Goldendale, WA, marked an 89 aboard Monkey Blood owned by Chad and Cheire Weisnhun to win the long round. Laddan Ledbetter of Gardendale, TX, rode the Lyndel Hurst bull Fat Jimmy for 88.5 points to place second in the long round. Tied in the third and fourth place slots were Brandon Edwards, who rode Top Gun owned by Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo to an 87.5 score, and Oakes who also marked an 87.5 aboard Copan Cat owned by Lonnie Brown.

Oakes came back to tie for a win in the final round with a 90 point ride on Alan Murphy's bull Mr. Incredible, which solidified first place in the average standings. Tied for first in the finals was Travis Sellers of Wentzville, MO, who made a 90 point ride on Border Patrol, also owned by Murphy. Sellers finished second in the average.

Oakes said he is happy to be able to make a living and provide for his family by riding bulls. From an early age Oakes was a family man. He got married one week after his 18th birthday. Now he has two little girls that he enjoys spending time with. He says riding bulls is all about providing for them.

"I just want to make lots and lots of money. A lot of people want to win the world. I don't have that much desire to win a championship. Of course, it is always good to win. I just want to make enough money to live comfortably. I'm really glad to have the opportunity to ride for this much money. It sure means a lot. There are a lot of other things going on right now that a guy could go to, but it means a lot to me to be on this CBR tour," said Oakes.

Oakes grew up in Oregon. His dad rode bareback horses when he was young and took Oakes to lots of rodeos as a child to get him started riding steers and calves. He got on his first bull when he was 13 years old. Oakes rodeod throughout high school and is very proud to have qualified to the National Finals Rodeo on several occasions. He grew up breaking colts and training horses with his father who is a now a reining horse trainer. They still partner on horses, with Oakes getting them safe and broke, then his dad putting all the reining finesse on them.

When he is not hanging out with his girls, breaking colts or on the road, Oakes likes to relax and go fishing.
