CONROE, Texas – (October 3, 2017) – The $50,000 prize purse has caused fury in the race to be on Tuff Hedeman’s roster for this weekend’s Conroe Bull Mania and in addition to three World Champions, including the industry’s top gunner, six time World Champion Sage Kimzey, there are ten National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifiers including Crockett’s Boudreaux Campbell who just qualified for his first NFR and is the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association’s (PRCA) leading Rookie of the Year. Local athletes qualified and competing include Houston bull rider Demond Haynes, Rock Island native Trey Benton, III, and  former CBR World Champion Cole Echols from Dodge, Texas.

Bull riding’s finest will take center stage on Saturday night at the Lone Star Expo Arena where the cowboy athletes from 11 states will take the dirt to battle the world class bulls, powered by the CBR Bull Team Challenge competition. The reigning World Champion, Sage Kimzey a native of Oklahoma now living in Texas, will be playing catch up to the current leader, rookie rider Ruger Piva and the top 24 ranked riders including last year’s Bull Mania champion Jeff Askey. Kimzey missed the first three events of the 2017-18 season due to conflicting rodeo schedule and being behind is not a position the three time PRCA World Champ and three time CBR World Champion is accustom too.

This is the fourth year Conroe Bull Mania, part of the nationally televised Road to Cheyenne tour, has come to the Lone Star but this year’s intermission will feature a different race for the gold buckle. Conroe Councilman Duane Ham will attempt to unseat the reigning intermission World Champion, Mayor Pro Tem Duke Coon who rode for 3.5 seconds last year on Bill the Bull to raise funds and awareness for anti-bullying. The funds help purchase 300 copies of "Bill is no Bully" children’s book that were placed in the Conroe Independent School District schools. The children’s book written by Cindy Hedeman, is available on Amazon.com.

This year’s bull riding competition is aimed at paying tribute to first responders of Hurricane Harvey and CBR Chairman of the Board local businessman Benny Cude has opened the event to First responders, active and veteran military and educators free of charge.

"It's for a great cause and we want to thank everybody and give them a show in appreciation for what they have done for this community," said CBR Chairman of the Board, Benny Cude.

The nationally televised bull riding features the top 24 ranked bull riders in a tournament style format that appeals to fans because riders challenge as many as three bulls in one performance.  The doors open at 6:30 pm and the action begins at 8:00 with the professional rider’s testing their skills against some of the best bovines in the industry and doing their best to hang on for eight seconds. The top 12 from round one advance to a semifinal round with the evening ending in the four man Shoot Out where the bulk of the $50,000 in prize money is paid. The prize money is doubled at this stop because no rider made the 8 second whistle to collect the money on the last tour stop in Laughlin, Nevada, resulting in the money being added to the pot for the Conroe event.

In addition to the doubled prize money, bull riders accumulate points which qualify them for the World Finals, which will be in Wyoming next July as part of the historical Cheyenne Frontier Days celebration. Those points become very important as the rider who ends the world finals at the top of the standings will be crowned the CBR world champion and will receive a $100,000 bonus.

CBR’s “other side of the ride” Bull Team Challenge competition features locally owned bulls that are part of the crème of the crop in bovine athletes that power the event. The bulls receive points for their performance in the arena. Additionally, the time the bull rider stays on is added to the bull’s score. At the end of the night, the top four owners with the three highest-scoring bulls will receive a prize purse worth $45,000.

CBR has become known for their action-packed performances that keep fans on the edge of their seats. That is largely due to the influence of four-time world champion bull rider Tuff Hedeman who coordinates every element and attends to the smallest details. From having great bulls matched up with super star riders, to upbeat music and enthusiastic fans, the Conroe Bull Mania will be second to none.

24 bull riders from 11 states competing including three world champions:  Reigning PRCA and CBR World Champion Sage Kimzey, Strong City, Okla., CBR World Champion, Cole Echols, Dodge, TX, 2013 CBR World Champion Josh Barentine, Johnson’s Bayou, La.  NFR qualifiers competing: Sage Kimzey, Cody Rostockyj, Jeff Askey, Trey Benton, Boudreaux Campbell, Cole Melancon, Caleb Sanderson, Trey Benton III, Tim Bingham, Cole Echols.
