Veteran Bull Rider Chandler Bownds Wins Jackson Horizon Series

Two World Champions and thirty-six bull riders from thirteen states and one international entry from Mexico rode 8 seconds to earn nine qualified rides inside the Oman Arena on night one of the annual Championship Bull Riding’s Bud Light Classic presented by Alan Vines Automotive.

Elite Rodeo Athletes Association’s World Champion Bull Rider Chandler Bownds from Lubbock, Texas thrilled the crowd with his 89.5 point ride on Y9 Final Judgement, a Texas bull belonging to Scott Burleson and William Barnett.

“My first bull was as good as you get on the professional tours and it worked out,” said the 26 year old bull rider who has qualified for three National Finals Rodeo and seven CBR World Finals competitions.

The first performance of the CBR’s annual bull riding extravaganza began with United States Army Veteran Juan Alonzo taking the lead as the first rider out of the chutes with 86 points on 343 Rio of Sanders, Hurst, and Baker. Cody Hodges answered that ride with 88 points on Jaynes Gang’s 1925 Painkiller and he would lead the competition until Bownds rode in section three as the twenty-third rider to nod his head.

Bownds outlasted the 38 man field including five time World Champion Sage Kimzey who scored an 88 to finish sixth. With two riders left on the roster, veteran Horizon Series leader Denton Fugate, Dixon, Missouri, scored 89.5 on JQH’s Abyss. In CBR competition, the tiebreaker is the back judge score in bull riding competition and Bownds received the higher score and advanced to the Bounty Bull to attempt the rank bull, 1086 Big Lew from Brown Ranch in Perrin, Texas.

Bownds would come down early off Tuff Hedeman’s choice for the bounty bull and miss the $10,000 bonus money offered to the rider who could make the 8 second whistle.

Green Acres / Rawson and Jeff Harris joined forces to win the Cheyenne Challenge Bull Team competition where the bulls were competing simultaneously in the Oman Arena with the bull riders. The bull team led by Jeff Harris of Palestine, Texas was thrilled to win the competition which comes with $20,000 and an automatic entry to the CBR’s World Championship in Cheyenne in July where the prize money is $100,000 to the best trio of bucking bulls.

“27 El Toro’s solid trip with Kimzey led the team tonight,” said Harris who owns the team with Elizabeth Trout of Ft. Worth, Texas. 27 was the only qualified ride on Harris’s team and his bulls included 231 Big Baby and 911 Hy Test who was the rankest marked bull in the arena last night with a 90 point four judged bull score.

The action returns tomorrow night for the riders and the bulls and Saturday night’s performance will feature the top 24 riders of the 2017 Road to Cheyenne tour, a twelve month nationally televised professional bull riding tour and the second performance will feature country music artist Jason Pritchett in concert immediately following the bull riding action.

This is the twentieth time CBR has lined up a group of elite bull riders for the Tennessee bull riding fans including three time Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and two time CBR World Champion, Sage Kimzey from Strong City, Oklahoma.

Kimzey won last week’s event in Enid, Okla., to retain his number one ranking but this week he will have to ride past a former Tennessee resident and University of Tennessee Martin, graduate Jeff Askey tonight to win the $30,000 prize package which includes a custom trophy Hyo Silver buckle, an American Hat Co. western hat, and a pair of custom Fenoglio cowboy boots.

“It’s exciting to be able to come back to Tennessee where I got my start and ride in front of such great rodeo and bull riding fans and I am really looking forward to seeing friends and competing in such a friendly crowd,” said Askey.

Joining Kimzey and Askey on the dirt will be a highly decorated set of National Finals Rodeo stars including Eli Vastbinder, Joe Frost, Cody Rostockyj, Chandler Bownds, Tim Bingham, Ty Wallace, and Rorey Maier. Bownds and Vastbinder will be at Alan Vines Automotive signing autographs on Saturday from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Four time World Champion and CBR Chute Boss Tuff Hedeman has been producing top rated events for over 30 years and has pulled out all the stops for the CBR’s 20th trip to Jackson. Ticket holders can look forward to a great night as CBR has recruited some of the industry’s leading entertainment including NFR Barrel man, J.J. Harrison and the Get Famous Energy Bullfighters.

CBR Famous Energy Bullfighters, grand pyro introductions, and great family entertainment assure bull riding fans enjoy the two hour adrenaline rush show. Pre event activities begin when the doors open at 6:00 and action gets underway at 8:00 p.m.

In addition to lucrative prize money, bull riders accumulate points which qualify them for the World Finals, part of the legendary Cheyenne Frontier Days celebration held Wyoming next July where the winner takes home $100,000.

The Bud Light Classic will also feature the “other side of the ride,” CBR’s Million Dollar Bull Team Challenge. Bull owners from all around the country will bring three bulls that are featured during the first two rounds of competition. The bulls are competing for points based on their performance in the arena. Additionally, the time the bull rider stays on is added to the bull’s score. At the end of the night, the owner with the three highest-scoring bulls will receive $20,000.

Come meet the Get Famous Bullfighters Schell Apple, Brandon Loden, and Matt Baldwin at 7 p.m. on Saturday night as they sign autographs in the lobby next to the merchandise booth.
