Bull Riding May be Bigger in Texas but for Codrick Murphy it was Better in Arkansas

In a land that celebrates tailgates and touchdowns, a Houston,Texas cowboy who calls himself Codrick “Hogg’n” Murphy was right at home last Saturday night competing in a state that is referred to as the Land of Opportunity and treasures the Razorbacks. It was said that Murphy put on a bull riding clinic for the 3,000 plus fans that when the seats ran out, they pulled up a lawn chair at the fence at the Polk County Fairgrounds.

Riding both of his bulls for a total of 172.5 average score on two, Murphy, a regular on the CBR’s Road to Cheyenne tour took home $2,881.44 and the championship title of the Mena Ford & Choctaw Casino Ultimate CBR Horizon in Mena, Arkansas.

With 33 competitors in the field, a four bull open bull team competition powering the bucking chutes, only two cowboys heard the 8 second whistle twice and received a score.

JT Moore, Alvin, Tex., who is currently ranked number four in the 2016 Horizon Series year-end Standings, was the high marked ride in the first round with a 90 point ride on Barnett and Burleson’s Flip Flop. Case Closed, another great bull from Barnett and Burleson, provided the assist to Murphy as he advanced on his 89.5 score in round one.

Coming in at third and fourth were the familiar CBR tour names of rising star Koby Radley with 87 points on Harris and Rawson’s Fancy Pants and rookie rider Colby Hill who took Harris’s Lone Wolf for 87 points. Newcomer Kolt Forinash was 82 points and retired US Army veteran, Juan Alonzo, was the last guy to hear the whistle with 81 points.

With six qualified rides on the board the short round drew four riders back on time, but their night was quickly ended when the defense showed back up… inside the chutes. The stock contractor’s bull team competition defended the turf bucking off the first six riders in the championship round including CBR World Finals qualifier, Joan Alonzo.

Colby Hill would pick up the crowd’s spirits with 84 points to take the lead as the first to ride two. Koby Radley in an attempt to unseat his brother in law in the Horizon Series year-end standings was going all out when he lost control of his free arm and slapped his bull at 7.72 seconds. With two riders left, Codrick Murphy pulled his rope and rode for 84 points and the lead change. Round one winner, Moore was the only cowboy left and he would buck off at 3.1 seconds securing the win for Murphy.

A two-time stock contractor of the year from Martinsville, Texas would take home the rank bull team competition honors in Mena. With 367.92 points, Mike Rawson’s four buckers worked hard for their $9,000 paycheck by bucking off every rider that attempted his Arkansas gang.

Rawson’s newest gang member, 122 Shystie bucked off El Paso tour champion Mickey Andrews, 132 Yabba Dabba Do was finished with Clayton Thorp in 5 seconds. 121 Spanky bucked off Winston Quennesbury while Rawson’s favorite out, 139 Little David, earning his highest marked bull score of the night and ending Troy Garcia’s Mena dreams.

“139 just keeps getting better and better each time I buck him,” said an elated Rawson after he finished first and fourth in the Mena bull team contest.

$20,000 dollars was paid out to stock contractors with Barnett and Burleson just 2.99 points and $5,400 dollars behind Rawson. Third place was Jeff Harris / Rawson with 364.50 pts and a check for $3600, and Jeff Harris earned the last place check his solo team coming in fourth.

“All the bulls were good tonight, but in my opinion Barnett and Burleson’s Two Socks was the outstanding trip of the event, that bull leaped out of the chutes and came around really hard,” continued Rawson about the Carl Wilburn bred calf.

The Horizon Series continues will close in Giddings, Texas where the winner of the national CBR Horizon Series Championship title will be decided. A $20,000 bonus check goes with that title and it will be a horse race to the finish. The 2015 winner was Cody Rostockyj of Hillsboro, Texas and current leader is Koby Radley of Prairieville, Louisiana.
