9100 Kojack

Owned by: Championship Pro Rodeo, Zach Craig, Brett Barrett and Benny Cude

Bred by: Marvin Nixon

Saturday night under the bright lights of Las Vegas, one lucky bull rider will have the chance to ride a bull that has taken many bull riders to the winner’s circle and several of those winning rides have happened in this week’s tour stop, the Tuff Hedeman Vegas Shootout at the South Point Hotel Arena. If you draw him you have a 45 percent chance of winning the round on this great bull owned by Championship Pro Rodeo.

9 times he has done his part and provided the assist to a bull rider for the round win including 3 time World Champion Sage Kimzey’s ride on him to win over $19,000 in Round 4 of the National Finals Rodeo in 2014 right here in Las Vegas. During the 2015 Tuff Hedeman Vegas Shootout, Kody Lostroh won Round 1 on Kojack with a 90.5 on the red bull purchased for CBR and PRCA competition by Zach Craig and Brett Barret.

9100 Kojack, who began as a partner project between PBR Hall of Fame rider Gilbert Carrillo and breeder Marvin Nixon, is a staple on the daysheet for Championship Bull Riding’s Road to Cheyenne Tour, but besides Kimzey, Chandler Bownds would look forward to seeing him again as well. Bownds who is making the rounds in Las Vegas promoting this year’s event, has been paired with Kojack and ridden him three times including CBR and PRCA competition and had this to say about Kojack.

“He is one that you want to see your name by every time, everywhere you go and he is a bull riders’ bull and you can be 86 to 90 on him every time.”

Neil Holmes rode him in the final four at the Fort Worth Tuff Hedeman Championship Challenge to win $4,550 and take second place. In addition to a CBR favorite, Kojack was the winning ride for Matt Dunsmore in 2015 for the Great Lakes Circuit Finals as well as the mount for Kody DeShon’s Round 1 win in Rio Rancho in January of 2016 on the CBR Road to Cheyenne tour.

Usually entered by Championship Pro Rodeo in the first round of action, the bucking bull sired by Carrillo Cartel, a PBR finals bull, is out of a Nixon bred cow.

According to Julie Carrillo of the 4C’s Bucking Bull Ranch, she and Gilbert partnered with Marvin Nixon on that herd and split the bull calves. He was a calf that Marvin kept. Frontier Rodeo Company had him for a few years and then he was purchased by Zach Craig, partner in Championship Pro Rodeo. From talking with Zach it sounds like he acts just like Cartel.  He is Nixon Breeding on the dam side, but exactly who is momma is undetermined at his point.

Craig and Barrett who has been involved in all aspects of livestock and rodeo production has won, or produced bulls that have won, over $600,000 including 846 Black Betty, and 813 Crazy Mother Trucker. Craig, the managing partner of Championship Pro Rodeo, has had buckers competing on all levels of professional bull riding. Some of his most recent super stars besides Kojack, include PBR and CBR finals bull 33-8 Ragin JT, NFR bulls 8388 Seeing Red and CBR World Finals bull and CBR 2015 Bull of the Year 050 Gold Buckle, 526 One More Dip, and 898 Swamp Dog.

Kojack’s best out according to Brett Barrett of CPR, was at the 2015 CBR World Finals when Eli Vastbinder bucked off at 6.78 seconds.

“I can tell when he loads in the chutes if it’s going to be a great out... he kind of rears up a little in the chute and I have to watch his head,” laughed Barrett who described him as dependable and easy to haul and be around.

Left handers have a more difficult time with him as they buck off 57 percent of the time as opposed to right handers that stand a 50 percent chance. His highest marked ride on the record books is a 92 with Cooper Davis in 2013 in Cody, Wyoming at a PRCA Extreme Bull competition.
