Oz Heats Up as the CBR Bull Team Challenge Competition Makes its Way to the Kansas Star Chute Out

We are off to see the Wizard. After ten stops on the Mahindra Road to Cheyenne tour, the bull riders and the bull team owners are looking down the yellow brick road to Mulvane, Kansas for the first of the final three attempts in qualifying for the CBR World Finals held in conjunction with Cheyenne Frontier Days in July. With only 3.5 points separating #1 Cody Teel and #2 Wyatt Rogers, the bull power that is loaded in the chutes is crucial to both the cowboy and the stock contractors who are both vying for valuable points on the eleventh stop of the twelve month nationally televised tour.

Returning to Oz is Greg Talbert, the defending Kansas Star Casino Bull Team Challenge Champion. Greg pulls in with only one of the same trio of buckers that won him $25,000 and a gold buckle last March. Hurricane Rick, a son of Crossfire Hurricane, will once again anchor Talbert’s team as a rank bull having only been ridden once since 2013.  He is joined by Spook and Big Papa Pump, a familiar bull to CBR riders originally hauled by Bryce Cooper. Kimzey rode Big Papa Pump for 83 points last year in the PRCA rodeo at Cheyenne.

Just four days since CBR stock contractor Lyndal Hurst bucked his bulls in the semifinals and final rounds at Rodeo Houston, he asked them to load up and head to Kansas.  207 Cactus Jungle, a grandson of Mossy Oak Mudslinger, will anchor Lyndal’s team as the veteran. 207 was ridden at the National Finals Rodeo in 2014 by Elliot Jacoby for 86.5 points, but most recently carried Joe Frost to pick up the $25,000 check at the RodeoHouston Super Shoot Out that followed the finals of RodeoHouston last Sunday. #2 Sexy, a new bull on tour for Hurst in 2015 is making his second appearance at a CBR tour event after bucking off Taryl Smith in Rio Rancho earlier this season. Besides having a super cool name, 2 Sexy has recently been the chatter behind the chutes as “the one you want”. Winning a round for Bobby Welsh at RodeoHouston, coming in second in another RH round, and posting big qualified rides in San Antonio, 2 Sexy is becoming 2 good to be true.

Other interesting changes in bull team lineups include Cude Energy’s return of Greenhorn. Greenhorn, a bull rider favorite that carried Cody Teel to the winner’s circle in Lufkin in 2014, has been absent from the CBR Team Challenge and according to bull skipper Mike Jones, “Greenhorn is bucking great and we decided to haul him to Kansas to join the team”.

Mike Sellers retooled his team and brings 917 Rat Killer, 126 Hood Rat and 846 Black Betty to the tables at the Kansas Star Casino. Gambling that the bulls’ previous three scores will repeat, Sellers bucks Black Betty for the final time in his tenure with Sellers Bucking Bulls. Black Betty joins Mike Rawson’s team ventures for the remainder of the 2015 season and thereafter.

Making a last minute agonizing change to their team was Craig, Barrett, and Elite’s team. Ragin JT was rushed to Oklahoma State University Veterinarian center yesterday where he remains in unstable condition at OSU with an undiagnosed illness. Swamp Dog will attempt to fill JT’s large hooves on Saturday night in Mulvane. JT, the Reserve Bucking Bull of the year in 2014, has been highly anticipated as one of the “best draws” in bull riding.

The high marked bull in Thibodaux, LA last fall joins the Elite Buckin Bull team. 093 White Lightening will be making his first appearance in Kansas. In his fourth CBR appearance he comes to Mulvane with a three for three record. 093 has being ridden by Lane Toon, Aaron Pass, and Chris Roundy in 2015 CBR action.

Deciding not to rock the boat is Clark View Farms bull team which travels the furthest, making the trip from Wisconsin with Hazmat, a grandson of Real Deal, Boogeyman and After Hours. All three bulls post great statistics in bull riding. Hazmat shows stats of only being ridden four times (22 recorded outs) in his career and two of the four were at CBR competitions.

Other teams kept intact are Sanders, Hawks, and Lane with Rotten Apple, bull rider favorite Canadian Cadillac, and Bud Lane’s Snake Farm who carried World Champion Josh Barentine to 90 points in Del Rio at the 2013 George Paul Memorial Bull Riding.

JC Knapp and Flip Connolly are bringing the heat with two undridden bulls, 61 Black Warfare and 181 Rojo Picoso. Keep your eyes on these two for rank trips, the bulls that is.

Others to watch will be JQH’s rank youngster Wicked Ways, who carried Juan Alonzo to 91 points and a round win in Las Vegas two week ago.

The closest thing at the Kansas Star to a hometown favorite is Arkansas City, Kansas former CBR stock contractor of the year, Brad Vogele, who brings 871 Hell Pony, a grandson of Chaos to the casino arena competition. Hell Pony remains unridden after two CBR appearances in 2015.  Rounding out Vogele’s team is 052 American Fire who assisted Sage Kimzey in winning his first CBR title in 2014 in El Paso, Texas and 15 Bounce It who bucked Craig Jackson off in Jackson, Tennessee at the season opener.

The Kansas Star Casino Chute Out gets underway with the bulls from the CBR Bull Team Challenge at 8:00 pm at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kansas.
