Louisiana Natives Taylor Toves and Sheldon Price Earn 8 Seconds of Glory in Thibodaux

Being first at the sound of the gun does not always mean being first at the ribbon of victory, but on Saturday night in Cajun country the 8 Seconds to Glory Bull Riding ended just as it began with the first three gunners out of the gate placing first, second, and third in the average.

The annual James Pierce produced extravaganza benefiting the Cancer Center of Thiboaux Regional Medical Center was held at the Warren J. Harang Municipal Auditorium, and has become a perennial favorite of not only the bull riders but the stock contractors, staff, fans, and 4 time World Champion Tuff Hedeman.

The Thibodaux event is the second leg of a 3 city 8 Seconds to Glory bull riding tour produced by former bullfighter James M. Pierce who in a weird twist of fate, after launching this event three years ago, is now facing his own battle with cancer.

The south Louisiana experience began the day before with an entourage of bull riders, bullfighters and event staff visiting patients at the Cancer Center in Thibodeaux... Later in the evening Jambalaya was on the menu at Tuff Hedemanís Kick-Off Party held at the Olde Icehouse in Thibodeaux.

On Saturday night when the timers were live and the anthem was sung it was Taylor Toves, a native of Alexandria, Louisiana, now living in Stephenville, Texas, who once again who set the pace in the number one draw position. He paved the way with an 87.5 on Red Rocket.  Hondo Flores followed his lead making the whistle and scoring an 85.25 on the Honey Badger and Cody Wood answering with an 86.5 on Witch Doctor to round out the first three riders on the day sheet. All three qualified rides in the first three slots were owned by Pointed Rock Cattle Company of Stephenville, Texas.

Nine more cowboys would hear the whistle at eight seconds to complete the long go with Lane Nobles winning the round, after taking a re-ride, with a 91.5 on MR13 Whitey McCracken of Mike Rawson.

With 12 riders, including WNFR qualifier Reid Barker, advancing to the championship round, Barker would strike first in the number 12 position with a 90.75 on Kool Kat (Pointed Rock), and be the first to ride two for a 179.25 average. Cody Wood would answer with 86.5 on Banditoís Gold (Rawson) followed by Hondo Flores on Blame It On Mexico (JFI) for 89 points.

The number two ranked cowboy on one, Taylor Toves, would make the whistle on Far Southís bull Shorty with an 87.5. With all the pressure on Nobles, the #1 seed, to be at least an 87.5 to tie Toves he bucked off Rockin Rís 405 A Whooping at 1.78 seconds thus finishing 5th on his 91 point score from round 1.

Toves, reiterating his commitment to Championship Bull Riding, is currently the number 2 ranked bull rider on the CBRís Horizon Series tour and  the event champion from the November 1st Spooktacular Bull Riding in Jacksonville, Texas. Toves who stays in shape getting on practice bulls weekly at the Lonestar Arena in Stephenville, Texas, is poised to join the CBRís televised The Road to Cheyenne tour which begins on January 10, 2015 in Bossier City at the Eldorado Resort and Casinoís Tuff Hedeman Championship Bull Riding.

The open bull team competition was won by Far South Bucking Bulls owned by Sheldon Price from Chauvin, Louisiana. Leading the Far South Team was Rodeo Red who was a cumulative 67 points as he bucked off Cody Colvin, Dubberly, Louisiana, at 4.81 seconds. Priceís win included a check for $12,000 and an 8 Seconds to Glory buckle. Far South won the competition with rank scores plus ride times and only one of their four bulls, Shorty, being ridden.

Mike Whiteís MW10 Show Me won the $1,200 check for high marked bull, bucking off Ezekiel Mora in 4.2 seconds.

The third and final leg of the 8 Seconds to Glory tour is scheduled for Houma, Louisiana on January 3rd.
