Border Town Showdown as Tuff Headman Selects the Final Four bulls for the Mercedes $70,000 Shootout Round

 J908 Outside the Box

Owner: The Jaynes Gang - Orchard, Texas

What to expect? Speed with power

J908 is clearly the most experienced bull on the CBR final four Shootout list having been to the CBR World Finals in Cheyenne for three consecutive years. The big black and white bull has 21 recorded professional outs with only two rides with both coming from CBR events and both 90 point plus scores. Corey Maier rode him in Cheyenne for 90 and Trey Benton won the George Paul Memorial Bull Riding in Del Rio on this bull in April with a 91 point ride in the Shootout round. When his front feet hit the ground he sometimes goes backwards as he makes a powerful left turn, which puts the rider up on his front end. When he has you where he wants you he “turns the crank”, as one bull rider described, “until he gets you off his back.” After watching 7 videos of this bull it also looks like he does something a little unusual, instead of bringing his front end around as he makes that first corner, he brings the rear around – faster and faster. Outside the Box is sired by Jed Clampett, a PBR and NFR Finals bull owned by Frontier Rodeo. With 13 different CBR riders having attempted J908 and 7 of those cowboys scheduled to ride in Mercedes, will someone new conquer this great bull or will it be a rematch of a previous challenge?

17 Honky Kat

Owner: Rafter J Ranch/Harris Bucking Bulls - Palestine, Texas

What to expect? Big blowout move and he gets stronger with each rotation

Honky Kat, the most recent addition to the 2014 Stock Contractor of the Year’s lineup, is a son of -8 Body Works, a Sammy Andrews hauled National Finals Rodeo bull (2010-13). In spite of the fact that he was born to a Mexican cow, Harris claims he is gentle outside the chutes and likes to be handled. The #1 ranked CBR bull rider Tanner Bothwell is anxious for a rematch if given the opportunity. “I was a little nervous riding for the first time in the Final Four and I overrode him in Huron, I would like another shot at him,” said Bothwell. “Revenge”.  The number two cowboy, Trey Benton, also would like to try Honky Kat again after bucking off of Harris’ new bull in Conroe for a loss of the $50,000 prize monies. On his journey to the Bulls on the Border Bash, Honky Kat made a quick stop in Liberty, Texas on Wednesday for the Trinity Valley Fair and Rodeo Horizon Series bull riding where he dumped Braden Richardson in 3.78 seconds.

059 Boomer

Owner: Mid-States Rodeo Co /Elite Buckin Bulls - Dickinson, North Dakota

What to expect? Strong, fast, with good timing

When Nick Volden rode a small whitish bull for 89.5 points October 4th in Conroe, Texas, no one really knew who or where Boomer the bucking bull came from - actually, his owners don’t really know either.  According to owner Zach Craig, he and Mitch Terrell bought a package of bred cows in 2009. Later that year 059 was born in the sprawling pastures of Abilene, Texas. When it came time to gather and sort the pairs 059 was accidentally lost and sorted into the wrong pasture leaving him to fend for himself for survival. One year later he was discovered alive and well..sort of. Small and underweight he was discovered and moved to greener pastures. Small but strong, “Boomer” as he is now called packs a powerful punch for his slightly under 1,000 pound frame. He marked a 44 bull score at a PRCA rodeo in Freedom, Oklahoma, but he remains somewhat unknown to the regular CBR tour riders. What is known is that if rookie Nick Volden makes the Final Four Shootout Round it is a no brainer he would select the 22 point plus bull once again after riding him for 88.5 at his first Road to Cheyenne televised Tour event.

8043 Penny Lover

Owner:  Cude Bucking Bulls/7 Rockin X Ranch Benny Cude - Priddy, Texas

What to expect? Strong out of the chute, and will drop a shoulder, buck faster or change directions to eject the rider before either of them hears the 8 second whistle

Winning the battle against top bull riders and the 8 second whistle is more than just a hobby with this bull – it seems it is his life’s work. With 15 CBR outs since July of 2013, Penny Lover is a fixture on the Road to Cheyenne. He has cost Sage Kimzey, Cody Teel, JW Harris, Cody Rostockyj, Neil Holmes, Corey Maier, and Simao De Silva a total of over $150,000 in earnings. With bull scores as high as 47 points, Penny Lover averages 46 points on his side of the chutes. This strikingly attractive black and white bull is a son of the great Frontier rodeo bull Just a Dream who himself was more like a nightmare for most of his opponents as well. It is anybody’s guess who, of anyone, will be the first to ride this bull, but if it happens in Mercedes you can bet it will be for a huge score and the $70,000 check signed by Tuff Hedeman.
