The Odd Couples

The Championship Futurity Tour (CFT) 2014 season is now in the books and a total of $285,000 in prize monies from 5 events are tucked safely in the bank accounts of over 25 different stock contractors. But if you are a bucking bull enthusiast you know the best of the CFT is still yet to come. Which of these two year old bucking bulls will continue on to be the future buckers of Championship Bull Riding and the rodeo industry?

There are pages of individual bull performance records from various events through-out the season available for review which you would think could predict the future of the industry. Breeders are known to say selecting one bull to enter an event is usually easy. Sorting and selecting three to perform in harmony on the same date, at the same time, in the same arena is no easy feat. In addition to the Champion Rockin R team, who won the CFT World Finals on October 4, 2014, several other two year old bulls and teams stood out as extraordinary talent among the bovine athletes.

Without using a crystal ball, here is a glimpse into the possible future of the bucking bull world…

It is no surprise that the Reserve Champion CFT team came from J.C. Knapp Bucking Bulls, Mansfield, Texas. J.C. and Amber Knapp are perennial CBR participants and winners in all aspects of the industry.  Not only do they host young bull riders each week at their ranch, they enjoy raising and participating in the futurity team competition.  This year teaming up with Dennis and Jan Owens for their World Finals team, the Knapp’s and Owens were more than pleased (and a little surprised) with their team’s performance and the $27,200 outcome at last Saturday’s second CFT World Finals held as the first bull session of the Conroe Bull Mania at the Lone Star Arena in Conroe, Texas.

The Owens who were fresh from a great run at the UBBI Finals with two bulls finishing in the top 5, had already selected their three best calves for their CFT team entry when J.C. called. “We had several others that were good (bulls) so we partnered with 3 that had not made the cut for our number one team,” explained Jan Owens with some surprise in her voice that the unproven team of three bulls that finished second and beaten their top team that had over $25,000 in 2014 earnings!

So who were these calves that were supposed to be at home grazing and growing on the morning of October 4th?

The highest marked bull on the unknown Knapp-Owens team as well as the 4th highest marked bull of the competition was #28 – 9 who was purchased from the Bar 3D Sale, Patty Drio’s annual sale in Big Sandy, Texas. He is a son of Blue Duck and has individual earnings of $3,614 in the UBBI series. He participated at the UBBI Finals, but until J.C. called Owens to partner up for the CFT, this young bull was going to stay home said Owens. #28 marked 90 points to lead the trio. The second bull out was 412T, who is normally a 22 point plus bull according to Jan Owens, “T drifted a little, looking for better footing – the dirt seemed a little sticky.” Third bull out was W604, a jumbo sized white futurity bull who was bred by CBR President Carl Wilburn. This calf, who looked ready for a bull rider, blew out of the chutes with a huge jump and big extension. If you were trying to predict who would take home the big prize at the CFT Finals, this team was anything but probable, but then again futurity teams usually are unpredictable.

Finishing in the top 5 was an impressive 89.75 out by bull #22 representing Wilson and King. According to Trey King, “he is pure Wilson Breeding and Mr. Henry has raised him and I haul him and take care of him. He has placed at one UBBI event and has always done well for us. We have entered him on our team at every CBR Futurity we went too this year, but he is pretty hard to handle and he finally settled in at the Conroe event and showed his true ability,” continued King.

Anchoring the third place team of Andrus and Barker #2 was 2125 Wicked Stick with an 89.5 score. This trio of bulls was powered by Diamond S Bucking Bulls of Weatherford, Texas. #2125 is owned by Diamond S Bucking Bulls. Wicked Stick at the top of the leader board was no surprise to the boys on the back of the chutes as he banked over $23,000 in individual earnings this year and finished second in the UBBI final year end standings.  #2125 is a son of Paradise City (Houdini/Skat Kat) who is still bucking on the Diamond S trailer, and out of a Mudlsinger/Crossfire Hurricane daughter. Backing him up was Diamond’s 218 Fat Bobby, a son of Gigilo and out of a Shanghai Daughter. Fat Bobby is co-owned with Bob and Jeri Adams and also posted 89.5 points. Third on the Andrus Barker #2 team was 249 Midnight Dynamite, a son of National Finals Rodeo bucker Rustler Paradise (Hot Damm/White Water) and out of a Shanghai cow. 249 was also a $3,000 plus winner at the recent UBBI finals.

“Ironically two of the three on this team, 249 and 218, had been competing regularly at the UBBI having the exact same trip but never finishing high enough to draw a check,” recounted Diamond S bull manager extraordinaire Scott Pickens. But put two solid bulls on a team with one superstar and you are $17,650 dollars richer!

Recording the second highest individual score of the day was Wilburn/Cude/Foutch/Ott’s #6. With Chase Foutch at the helm, #6 was 90.25 points, a personal best for this V Valentine/Turbo/Vindicator bred calf. This bred to buck and buck again calf had a good week. Seven days prior this calf finished 6h at the UBBI Futurity Finals in Mulvane, Kansas winning a total of $5,000 in UBBI competition.

Rounding out the top ten of individual scores was new team owner William Barnette of Barn2Buck. His 091 Big Worm was an 89.25 to assist his team in a top 10 slot and a piece of the $135,000 pie.

The CBR hosted the 30 team, $135,000 CFT World Finals, a division of its wildly successful bucking bull team program, for two year old bucking bulls who had qualified earlier in the year thru a four event competitive system. Four cities hosted the twenty team competition off three bulls each during the year awarding $20,000 for each first place cash prize, a championship buckle and a guaranteed qualifying slot for the tour’s World Finals held October 4th in Conroe, Texas, at the Lonestar Expo Center. A total of $285,000 was awarded by CFT to bull team owners in the 2014 season. See you next year!
