Seasoned Bulls Succeed for Barrett and Jones on the Third Stop of CBR Championship Futurity Tour

MYRTLE SPRINGS, TEXAS, May 24, 2014 –The Championship Futurity Tour (CFT) 2014 season is well underway with the third of four showcase events for competitive bucking bulls now in the books.

The Breeders Bull Games division of the CFT hosted the twenty team challenge for two year old bucking bulls followed by a rank bull competition for three year olds at the Austin Ranch just outside of Myrtle Springs, Texas.  Twenty teams of three bulls each competed for the $20,000 first place cash prize, a championship buckle and a guaranteed qualifying slot for the tour’s World Finals to be held October 4th in Conroe, Texas, at the Lonestar Expo Center.

A total of $37,000 in prize money was awarded Saturday morning to five futurity teams with the top honors going to Barrett/Wallgren/Keel of Ardmore, Oklahoma with a total team score of 265.50. Leading the Oklahoma based team with the highest score of the day was #279 Bottoms Up with a combined four judge score of 91 points. Bottoms Up, raised and flanked by Mitch Terrell, Ardmore, Okla., has already banked over $80,000 this year from competitive aged events earnings.  A son of the bucking bull great El Presidente, 279 is a bull that Barrett admits is hard to get out of the chutes, but is worth the effort. The spotted bull exhibited great strength and height with the ability to turn back quickly while bucking steady with near perfect timing.

The second and third bulls of this winning team have also seen the winner’s circle before.  Earlier this spring, 901 Round Trip was the Champion of the Rhinestone Renegades Women’s Futurity with Rachel Norris flanking the Frick bred calf.  “The third bull, 277, sired by Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo’s Zorro has also placed everywhere he has bucked this season and had another solid out today”, said Barrett who orchestrated the team’s win. This is the first CFT Futurity Championship buckle for Brett Barrett and his partners who finished fourth in the CFT Finals of 2013.

As the next generation of buckers finished accepting their awards, the three year olds were stacked and loaded ready for their shot at over $32,000 in prize monies. At the end of the round it was JQH at the top of the leader board, twice. Skip and Elaine Jones brought a full trailer to Myrtle Springs to compete and after falling short in the earlier competition they struck gold with Speckled Buck and Sting placing first and third respectively. The Amarillo couple who is competitive in all levels of Championship Bull Riding is also well known for their champion cutting horses and bucking horses. Striving for excellence in all that they do, Jones was impressed with their bull’s rank performance. Speckled Buck, a son of Buckwheat, finished with a 93 point bull score and a check for $9,720.00.

Finishing second behind Buck was –X Black Soul (Flying D and Martinez) with 91.5 points. Soul is a double bred White Sports Coat bull who is busy racking up wins on the 2014 bucking bull derby circuit. Previously placing second three times in three of the industry’s most prestigious events, this bull was the high marked calf in the 2013 CBR CFT Futurity Finals last October in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The CBR Championship Futurity Tour continues on July 12th in Myrtle Springs, Texas at the Lonnie Austin Indoor Arena.
