Bownds wins championship at Scottsdale Showdown

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., (Oct. 19, 2013) --- A healthy Chandler Bownds came to the Scottsdale Showdown with one goal in mind, ride every bull that he got on and let the business end of bull riding take care of itself.

While that was the goal of all 24 bull riders entered here, Bownds from Lubbock, Texas, was the most successful, earning $10,000 and the championship at the new event on Championship Bull Riding’s (CBR) Road to Cheyenne Tour.

In the first round of competition, Bownds was part of a three way tie for second place after scoring 88 points on Cude Energy’s Greenhorn. That advanced him to the second round where he bucked off Talbert #1’s Pretty Boy. He wasn’t the only one that bucked off as none of the twelve riders in that round were

So, the top four riders from the first round advanced to the Chute Out Round. That included Bownds, who got on Cude Bucking Bulls’ Me Too and had the high-marked ride of the night at 90.5 points.

“That wasn’t the bull that I was going to pick,” Bownds said. “I didn’t know anything about him, but he came around to the left and it turned out pretty good.”

Aaron Pass, from Mesquite, Texas, had the high-marked ride in the first round with a 90-point effort on No Hands owned by B&M Bucking Bulls. Pass also rode in the Chute Out Round scoring 89 points on Gary Fortier’s Under Par becoming the first man to be successful on the previously unridden bull. Pass earned $6,000.

The two-way tie that advanced Bownds to the Chute Out Round also included Ardie Maier from Timber Lake, S.D. Maier who was successful on Lyndal Hurst’s Showboat scoring 88, good for $4,000. The reigning CBR world champion Cole Echols from Elm Grove, La., tied for fourth and fifth place with Neil Holmes, from Houston, Texas, with 86.5 points.  Echols got in on a tie-breaker but failed to ride Mike Rawson’s Backdraft.

The Palace Station Million Dollar Bull Team Challenge was won by Rawson/Shippy from Nacogdoches, Texas. Their three bulls had a cumulative score of 282.29 to win $25,000. The team included Scene of the Party, Lumber Jack and Bandito’s Gold.

The event was produced by the Scottsdale Charros, a philanthropic group founded in 1961 as an arm of the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce. They are already organizing next year’s Scottsdale Showdown and planning their next CBR competition.

Championship Bull Riders will take a break from the Road to Cheyenne Tour while many of their riders are getting ready for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s championships, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Among them are Bownds and Echols who will be in Las Vegas competing in ten rounds Dec. 5 – 14.
