Nebraskan wins first night of CBR competition at South Dakota State Fair

HURON, S.D. (Aug. 28, 2013) --- The first night of the Red Wilk Construction CBR Bull Bash got off to a rousing start with a Championship Bull Riding (CBR) Horizon Series event at the South Dakota State Fair.

The big winner was a Nebraska bull rider with South Dakota ties. Jake Bode, who lives in Elgin, graduated from South Dakota State University with a degree in agricultural business in 2012. He won the bull riding title for SDSU in the Great Lakes Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association and qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo in 2011.

Bode had the high-marked ride of the night with an 89-point effort on Talbert and Collumís bull named Justin. That earned the rising star in the bull riding world a check for $3,139 and a chance to ride the bounty bull. That bull was Cude Bucking Bullís Me too, but he got the best of Bode just before the eight-second mark. Had Bode ridden, he would have received a $10,000 bonus courtesy of Red Wilk Construction.

ďThis was my first event, and I didnít know what to expect,Ē Bode said. ďIt was awesome. I came here to win and was planning on staying on, but I didnít expect anything like this. I wish I would have stayed on the bounty bull. That would have made things pretty fun for a while.Ē

While the win was exciting for Bode, he is hoping to add to it on Thursday night. By virtue of his success on Wednesday, he will be advancing to the Road to Cheyenne on Thursday where $30,000 in prize money is up for grabs.

The second performance of the Red Wilk Construction CBR Bull Bash gets underway at the South Dakota State Fair on Thursday night at 8 p.m.
