Chase for the Buckle

CBR Riders Battle it out in Final Three Events

There are just three events left on the 2013 Road to Cheyenne Tour. With enough points up for grabs to make the CBR World Champion buckle within anyone’s reach, the field of riders is chasing veteran Cole Echols. The Louisiana native has had his sights on the world championship since he began riding bulls and, given the way he’s been riding lately, anyone who wants to catch him better come ready to ride. Of course, the list of riders ready to challenge him is full of cowboys who plan to give him a run for his money – and that buckle.
If Cole Echols needed a reason to be more confident he got one in Dodge City. Nothing will give a cowboy that extra swagger he needs going into the final leg of the season like a check for $43,500. Winning the biggest check of his life likely has him feeling worthy of the title and he’ll be riding with confidence going in to Fort Worth, Las Vegas and Del Rio. The George Paul Memorial in Del Rio was Cole’s big win in the 2012 season so he’ll undoubtedly look to claim back-to-back championships there. If he can succeed in winning the George Paul again he’ll be unstoppable going into the CBR World Championships at Cheyenne Frontier Days.
Cooper Davis is a young kid CBR President Tuff Hedeman has mentioned a lot in his picks for each event this season. He’s trailing Cole Echols closely and has a shot at the championship if he places well at the final three events. Cooper won the Lubbock event last month and, as the 2012 Texas High School Rodeo Association’s Bull Riding Champion, he knows what it takes to win. He qualified for the finals in Cheyenne last year so don’t expect him to choke at the big show if it comes down to the wire.
When a cowboy is leading the standings there’s probably nothing as intimidating as having a reigning World Champion hot on your heels. 2013 PRCA World Champion Cody Teel sits in third place and would surely love to add another world champion buckle to his trophy case. Cody came out of the gates on fire at the start of 2013. He won the first two events of the year, Jackson and Bossier City handily and has gone on to have several other top finishes at CBR and PRCA events.
CBR riders Ardie Maier, Jared Long and Tanner Learmont all sit within 200 points of leader Cole Echols. With three events to go, any of these men could get on a hot streak and shoot to the top of the leaderboard. The CBR World Championships at Cheyenne Frontier Days might be months away but over the next five weeks the race for the buckle will come down to the wire. Don’t stop watching now because the Road to Cheyenne Tour is far from over – it’s just heating up.
