2011 CBR Horizon Series Monroe Preview

Championship Bull Riding will kick 2011 off in style with a Horizon Series event in Monroe, LA, Saturday night.  The action will begin at 8:00PM Central Time, and the venue will be the Ike Hamilton Expo Center.  Seven of the top-10 riders in the 2011 standings are entered, and several more 2010 CBR Tour Finale qualifiers will be there as well.  This event also marks the 2011 season debut of reigning CBR World Champion Luke Kelley.  In addition, you can bet the bull power will be very strong as always.

I've put together a list of eight riders to watch this weekend in Monroe.  This event is shaping up to be a very good one to start the New Year, so if you are in the area, stop by for some exciting bull riding.  If you have anything to add, please visit our Facebook page and give your input.  Also, you can always email me at:  Enjoy!

Luke Kelley
Luke Kelley won the 2010 CBR World Title and decided to take a little time off.  He is making his return to Championship Bull Riding this weekend in Louisiana.  He suffered a finger injury in Kansas City at the Tour Finale, and I'm sure the time off allowed that to heal properly.  Kelley is probably extremely excited to return, and while there might be a little rust, he will still be one of the favorites to win this weekend.  I'm anxious to see how things go for the champ.

Clayton Foltyn
Clayton Foltyn has quietly put together a great start to his 2011 season.  He is currently second in the season standings and is the highest-ranked rider entered in Monroe.  He finished fourth in Springtown last month, and he has been as consistent as anyone so far this year.  Foltyn will have a chance to move to the top of the season standings with a good showing this weekend.

Chandler Bownds
Chandler Bownds started the 2011 off with a bang with a number of top-five finishes.  His highlight this year was a win in Allen, TX, in mid November.  The young Texan is currently fourth in the season standings and will be one of the favorites this weekend.  Bownds has struggled a little recently, but after a nice break, he will be ready to bounce back and possibly regain the top spot in the season standings.

Ardie Maier
Ardie Maier will be making his 2011 CBR debut in Monroe this weekend.  He had knee surgery in early October and was out until the 2010 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.  He showed a little rust in Vegas, but he finished in style with an impressive win on day 10.  Maier finished fourth in the 2010 CBR standings, and you can bet he will once again be a factor in the World Title race in 2011.  There is no better time to get things started than this weekend.

Wrangler Dunda
Wrangler Dunda is starting to get things going after a slow start to his 2011 season.  He won the Friday night Fort Worth event two weeks ago, and he will be looking to continue that momentum this weekend in Louisiana.  Dunda finished in the top 10 in 2010, and I predicted him to finish as the runner-up in 2011.  With New Year's upon us, it's time for the young Texan to turn things up a notch.

Riggin Phillips
Riggin Phillips is another rider who started the 2011 season a little slow, but he changed things in a big way with his win in Stephenville in late November.  The victory moved him close to the top 10, and he is currently 13th going into this weekend.  Phillips was a top-10 rider last season, and he was also one of the most consistent in Championship Bull Riding.  It won't be a surprise to see him contend again this weekend and keep his recent momentum going.

Jarrod Craig
Jarrod Craig hasn't entered many CBR events in 2011, so this weekend's event in Monroe will be one of his first opportunities to make a statement.  I picked him to win the 2011 CBR World Title, and there is a good reason for that.  He has finished in the top five in the CBR standings more than once, and his riding percentage is always near the top.  Craig will be tough to beat this weekend, and he will probably make his way onto the leaderboard before the event is over.

Clayton Williams
Clayton Williams is another rider coming off an appearance at the 2010 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.  He finished sixth in the final 2010 PRCA World Standings, and he finished 15th in the final 2010 CBR standings.  He is coming off a very consistent year and will be looking to do even better in 2011.  Williams took some hard shots in Vegas earlier this month, and it will be interesting to see how healthy he is when he rides this weekend.  This guy could be a serious contender over the next 12 months.
