Top bull riders crowd field of entries in 31st George Paul Memorial Bull Riding

Four world champion bull riders and most of the Championship Bull Riding's best bull riders have entered the thirty-first edition of the classic George Paul Memorial Bull Riding, the Original Superbull. Reigning CBR world champion, Bonner Bolton, Gardendale, TX, is entered and if he should win, it would be the first time the son of former George Paul Memorial Bull Riding champion would win the event. His father, Toya Bolton, Gardendale, TX won the event in 1991, 17 years ago. The entire Bolton family will be in attendance cheering on their son and brother.

Wesley Silcox, Payson, Utah, is the reigning Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world champion. Wilcox is currently ranked number 5 in the CBR standings and number 2 in the PRCA standings for 2008. Rounding out the field of world title holders is Matt Austin, Wills, Point, Texas, the 2005 PRCA title winner and Cody Hancock, Taylor, AZ the 2000 PRCA gold buckle winner. The list of talented professional does not end with these accomplished athletes and the field of entries is crowded with 36 additional contestants that are capable of winning, not only a George Paul title but, a world championship in 2008.

This year CBR has hosted 4 events, El Paso, Lufkin, Fort Worth, and Lubbock, TX. Del Rio is the fourth stop on the tour which culminates with the CBR World Championship the final weekend in January, 2009, in Las Vegas, NV.

The winners of the four held events are; El Paso, TX - Howdy Cloud, Kountze, TX; Lufkin, TX - Zack Oakes, Tonasket, WA; Ft. Worth, TX - Chad Castillo, Lipan, TX; Lubbock TX - Jay Morrow, Wayland, IA. All four are set to compete in Del Rio. Thirty-one of the top 45 bull riders from the 2007 season are entered as well as 7 of the National Finals Rodeo bull riding top 15 contestants from 2007.

Seventeen states are represented by contestants this year. When you consider the distance traveled and the expenses incurred, the George Paul Memorial Bull Riding draws the best of the best. States represented include Texas, Utah, Kansas, Washington, Iowa, Arizona, Missouri, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Illinois, South Dakota, Alabama, Idaho, Arkansas, and North Dakota.

All 40 riders will compete Saturday night. At the end of the first round, where each rider has competed, the rider with the best score will have the opportunity to attempt to ride the world famous Bad Company Rodeo Bull, Walk This Way. If the rider completes the 8 second ride, the Bounty Bull check will put $10,000 in his pocket. The Bounty Bull is sponsored by Aldo Ramon of Del Rio and Mexico and the Rancho El Fortin of Coahuila Mexico and the CBR. The El Rancho Fortin is famous for their Char Lois cattle and reigning Quarter horses. Their Quarter horses qualified for the National Reining Breeders Association Open in Katy, TX as well as the National Reigning Horse Association Futurity and will compete in Oklahoma City later this year. Ramon said, "We have been long time fans of the George Paul Memorial Bull Riding and my grandfather and Bobby and George Paul's grandfather, George Miers were long time very close friends. Our relationship goes back many years and we are delighted to be the Bounty Bull sponsor". In addition to fine Quarter Horses and Char Lois cattle, the family ranch in Mexico is home to bison, elk and many native wildlife species.

Since the George Paul Memorial Bull Riding was given the name "Superbull" and many have copied the name the record should be set straight. Tribute should be paid to the late Carl Guys, a Del Rio sports writer, for originating the name "Superbull" twenty-eight years ago. Guys did much to support the sport of bull riding as well as rodeo and always gave the sport more than equal treatment in print.

Tuff Hedeman, four-time world champion bull rider and three-time George Paul Memorial Bull Riding winner will be at Ram Country Dodge on Saturday, May 3, 2008, at noon to sign autographs, have pictures taken and greet fans. In addition, Tuff and the riders of the CBR will be available to sign autographs in the Val Verde County Fairgrounds arena at the conclusion of the Saturday night and Sunday afternoon performances.
