Trent Cormier takes George Paul Lead, Dave Samsel Takes on Walk This Way

The first night of bull riding at the 31st Annual George Paul Memorial proved as exciting as predicted. Fourteen of the 40 riders completed their rides on a night full of high scores and thrilling rides. Trent Cormier of Houma, LA finished the night with the high score of 93.5 on the bull Maverick a Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo bull. The high score gave Trent the opportunity to ride the bounty bull for a $10,000 prize at the end of the night. Trent declined the ride to tend to a minor injury and gave "Super" Dave Samsel from Haslet, TX the golden opportunity. Dave, one of the oldest riders in the circuit, at 37, was placed in spot number two after a ride on Hasta Luego from Bumbaca Bucking Bulls. Dave took the opportunity to ride the Bounty Bull, Bad Company's Walk This Way, grandson of the infamous bull Bodacious, and a shot at the $10,000 prize. The enthusiastic crowd anticipated the ride which came at the end of the night. Unfortunately Dave was bucked off out of the gate but happily told the crowd how honored he was to get the opportunity at such a prestigious bull riding event.

Of the 14 rides, Bonner Bolton the current CBR Champion, ended up fourth for the evening with a score of 92, which gives him a fair chance at a George Paul Memorial win, an honor which his father achieved in 1991.

Tomorrow afternoon the excitement continues in Del Rio. Bull riding at the George Paul Memorial picks up at 3PM. Scores from Saturday night and Sunday afternoon will be combined and the top 15 scores will go on to a final round and a $10,000 grand prize.
